3 Times You Might Need To Use Non-Destructive Digging

While traditional excavation techniques are the best option for some jobs, there are times when you need to find an alternative solution. For example, some jobs better suit non-destructive digging techniques such as vacuum or hydro excavation.

With these techniques, you excavate earth from under its surface. You either suck or wash the earth out without breaking the surface. When might this be the best excavation technique to use?

1. You Have to Excavate Around Existing Underground Infrastructure

If the area where you'll dig already contains underground infrastructure, such as pipes and cables, then you have to take extra care when you dig. Even if you scan the area or have plans that show where the infrastructure sits, you could cause some damage if you dig from the surface down.

Non-destructive digging is a much more controllable process. You can easily plan your excavation to avoid pipes and cables. Even if you get too close to a pipe or cable, the vacuum or water machinery you use in the dig won't cause any damage. You get a safer and faster excavation without affecting anything that is already in the ground.

2. Your Job Will Cause a Lot of Disruption

Some excavation jobs cause disruption. For example, if you need to lay a pipe across a busy road, then you would normally have to shut down parts or all of the road while you work.

This doesn't just cause traffic problems in your work area; knock-on effects could affect traffic in a wider geographical area. Traffic on your road won't flow as fast, and some drivers might take alternative routes which cause jams in other places.

If you use non-destructive digging techniques, then you can work under the road surface. You go into the ground from one side of the road and then dig out the necessary space until you reach the other side. You can then feed your pipe through the channel.

You generally don't have to close the road down at all. You can do your work without causing any disruption to road users.

3. You Can't Disturb Local Animal or Plant Life

You might have problems getting permission to excavate in an area which has protected animal or plant life on it. If you dig down, you might make environmental changes that threaten a species. For example, you might damage animal homes or plant roots.

You can use non-destructive digging to get around these boundaries. You won't disturb the surface when you dig; you can also plan to dig deeper if you need to to avoid damaging plant roots or animal activities.
